For the 40th year
of the Metro Manila Film Festival – New Wave (MMFF), MMDA Chairman Francis
Tolentino announces that prizes will be much bigger and more exciting. The MMFF’s “New Wave” competition was the
brainchild of MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino. It was introduced in 2010 due to
the continued popularity of “Indie” films that serve as a platform for aspiring
student and independent film enthusiasts to showcase their talents.
The festival has four (4) categories namely,
Full Length, Animation, Student shorts and Cinephone. Entries for all
categories are now being accepted in the MMDA office in Makati City.
The Cinephone competition,
meanwhile, is a nationwide cellphone movie-making contest for high school and
college students. This year’s theme is “Pagbangon
Pagkalipas ng Kalamidad,” a timely theme that would showcase the resilience
of Filipinos in times of calamity, to the world. Deadline for submission of
entries is October 4, with 60 videos to be selected as finalists.
In celebration of the Ruby
Year of the Festival, all feature film entry finalists will be given the rare
opportunity to show their films in commercial run in at least 20 cinemas
immediately after the festival..
The first MMFF New Wave University Caravan was held at the Letran
Auditorium. It was a whole day forum for students, independent film makers,
film professionals and the like, to discuss the many facets of film making. The
next leg of the University Caravan will be at the University of the Philippines
Film Institute on August 18, 2014; and another will be in Muntinlupa in Mid-August
at the Expo
Trade Hall, Festival Mall, Alabang. The lecture series is open to all. Admission
is free.
