Dell Expands Support for Youth Learning in the Philippines

Dell has joined the advocacy of Children’s Joy Foundation, Inc. (CJFI), an NGO that provides temporary care for children and youth needing rehabilitative and developmental services. The foundation seeks to assist the neglected, abandoned and surrendered children and youth in achieving their dreams through better education, physical and spiritual nourishment.  CJFI will receive a Dell Powering the Possible grant that will facilitate its aim to empower youth through education and computer literacy and help end the learning gap among unfortunate children.

The grant will enable CJFI to set-up computer labs with Dell desktops to provide basic computer literacy and other digital applications classes to at least 1,210 children and youth sheltered at the Children’s Joy Residential Centers, as well as from the marginalized communities served by the foundation through its outreach program.

This will provide opportunities to youth in marginalized communities who have the eagerness, interest and aptitude but are limited by circumstances and resources to fulfill their passions.

Dell have set up a few computer labs at CJFI centers in the Philippines and Quezon City and hopes to bring the benefits of the program to even more children over time. Dell Giving program targets foundations focused on youth learning, children cancer, disaster relief and social entrepreneurship. Dell contributes one percent of its after-tax profits to non-profit organizations doing work in the communities where our employees and customers live and work.”

IMFed and Children with Feeding Difficulties

Philippine studies show that 6 out of 10 mothers report that their children have feeding difficulties and most of them are worries about their physical and mental development. The effect may last up to 11 years of a child’s life and children with severe and prolonged feeding difficulties may experience impaired growth and low nutrient intake which result in physical and cognitive problems.
Feeding difficulties can be severe enough to impact on growth and nutrient intake, so it is important not only to address the eating behavior but also to provide adequate calories and nutrients to children as part of their management.  In order for a child to reach their optimum growth potential they require essential nutrients as well as adequate calories like Vitamins A and D, Iron and Zinc.

IMFeD Aims to Address this Serious Condition

Since there are different types of feeding behaviors that require a tailored approach, mothers need to be aware of the seriousness of this condition. Prevention and early intervention are important and these can be best consulted with a pediatrician trained on the management of feeding difficulties.

The Identification and Management of Feeding Difficulties (IMFeD) program is an evidence-based solution system that aims to screen, assess, and diagnose children with feeding difficulties.  It also provides tools and appropriate treatment plans for the different types of feeding difficulties.

Currently, there are more than 400 IMFeD MD Network  who can be consulted for these conditions. These doctors have collaborated to form an IMFeD network  to share the advocacy of screening every child for feeding difficulties and to provide clinical expertise in managing these children.

Abbott Nutrition Philippines supports this endeavor by creating awareness on the IMFeD MD Network.

Uplifting Sulu’s Education and Livelihood

A campaign “One with Sulu” which  aims to uplift the state of education and livelihood in Sulu, was recently launched to the public, with an exhibit and a documentary screening at Greenbelt 3, Ayala Center, Makati City.  One with Sulu was borne out of the partnership between Klasrums ng Pag-Asa, the Philippine Marine Corps, and the Tausug community, supported by different private sector volunteers and like-minded non-profit organizations and movements.

It is a unified effort to ensure quality education for the children of Sulu. The goal is to build more classrooms  and bring the southern stories of our Tausug brothers and sisters to a larger public and hopefully get them involved in bringing about genuine peace and development in an area that has seen much conflict.

As part of its project, Ayala Foundation is implementing Text2Teach and a sustainable livelihood program which will provide multimedia educational materials in English, Math, Science, and Values Education through mobile technology. There will also be a launching of crowd funding campaign for sustainable livelihood initiatives in the area. This will run in the

sparkproject.com for 45 days and aims to raise funds.

Other private sector companies are encouraged to help fund the construction of additional classrooms in Sulu. Proceeds generated by One with Sulu will fall under TEN Moves, which seeks to build 10,000 classrooms throughout the Philippines.

Through One with Sulu, we can understand the Tausug people better and have a deeper appreciation of the richness of their culture. It can also change the public’s perception about Sulu, sharing the local initiatives and helping them achieve their aspirations and dreaming of a brighter future for the children.  It is a step closer to the dream of finding and having a common ground among various stakeholders in Sulu
